Line Rider Project
There is a new interactive bulletin board up at school that features our final project from this school year. I am so glad that even during this pandemic we have found ways to express ourselves, to be creative, and to collaborate. Check out this great project that really shows the connections between storytelling, music, and art. Great work Amelia (5th Grade)!

Makerspace @ Decatur
Makerspace is a very unique course for students to imagine, tinker, create, question, collaborate, experiment and invent in an encouraging environment. When we make mistakes in class, we recognize failure isn’t the end but an opportunity to take a new path towards our goals. We persevere to rethink and try our design and ideas again. Check this video out to get a glimpse of what students create in Makerspace!

Makerspace: Nov. 12-22
In talking circles, Decatur students discussed and recorded what they're thankful for at school, in themselves and at home. Check out their their gratitude on paper chains on our gratitude tree in our North Lobby. 3rd graders also had a talking circle in Makerspace about how to make sure work completed in a group is evenly divided amongst all team members. 4th graders presented their Index Card Tower presentations, while students in K-2 began posting their reflections on Padlet. 6th graders in Rm. 107 have kicked off their robotic units by assembling a testbed, to get familiar with how the controller and various inputs/outputs in the robot brain function. In Science, 4th graders created reed instruments out of straws to explore amplitude and pitch in Science.

Math Stations
A bit of organized chaos, but really it's how a first grade classroom should be at times. Some students were simply exploring the balancing scales with objects from the classroom. Other students were working on their Measurement Monsters and others were doing their Lesson 4 practice sheet, which is a Must Do before they can move on to stations.

In this week's slideshow there are pics of: 6th grade working in cooperative groups to prepare their projects for the upcoming Energy Fair on June 6th, where they will present to students and staff from other grades to teach all about renewable energy such as wind, solar, hydropower, maglev, etc., as well as energy consumption and efficiency; 6th grade also got a special visit to our classroom from freshman and sophomore college students who are part of Northwestern University's Engineers Without Borders Program (EWB), where they presented to our students how they apply the same STEM skills they are learning now to pursue their own STEM pathways in areas such as surgical medicine, neurology, chemistry, and engineering; 7th grade worked in cooperative teams exploring the anatomy of bullfrogs though our bullfrog dissection project, which is a culmination of NGSS standards that they explored this year from cells to organisms through our SEPUP Biological Science Units of study; 8th grade will also get to explore the dissection project next week once graduation practices are complete. Thank you for checking in with us this week!
