A Fun Hands-on Exploration of Natural Selection in Science Class
As part of their new SEPUP Life Science Unit on Evolution, the 7th grade class was able to connect back to their previous unit on Reproduction by investigating the role of variation in how natural selection works over time. They conducted a hands-on simulation of birds with various beak traits feeding on "Wild Loops". The students learned how natural selection works to favor certain traits that are better suited to an organism's ability to acquire food in order to have a better chance of surviving long enough to reproduce offspring, thus showing the evolution of the various bird beak traits over many generations.

Grace B.'s Dance Choreography Reflection During the Pandemic
Featured
Dance is communication. It can sometimes be healing, an outburst of emotion, and connection. Sixth graders took the time to choose three words about their time at home during the current pandemic and used dance to communicate their lives at that moment. Please take a minute to watch Grace B.'s choreography to her three words: lonely, hopeful, stressful. I know we can all connect to Grace's words and movement in some way during this time!

Makerspace Sept. 3-13
During these past two weeks of school, we focused on building our community in Makerspace and getting comfortable with brainstorming new ideas. Students had an opportunity to tinker with material including gems, cork, cups, rocks, pom poms and foam pieces. They chose to work independently, with a partner or their entire whole table. This activity also served as a refresher on how to work/treat materials, how to respect each other at our tables and cleaning procedures. The creativity with materials was quite impressive. Very few projects were ever truly alike. Students imagined pom poms representing different types of food and creating a sandwich, using the foam pieces as the bun. Others used gems as garden paths, mazes and even water drops in a cup. Even towers made of cups were varied, both in size, shape and decor. Some students stayed limited to table and others chose build from the ground up!
