Week 18: Jan. 18-21, 2022
This week's slideshow highlights: students enjoying some independent reading of Science texts during our calm transition time at the beginning of class thanks to the generous donations of engaging STEM books and magazines from Decatur families; 6th graders cooperatively analyzing and interpreting graphs to identify correlation and causation of variables related to global warming; 7th graders engaging in a collaborative coin toss activity to simulate the randomness of organisms passing their alleles of their genes onto their offspring during sexual reproduction; 6th graders reviewing unit vocabulary terms with quizlet, a fun online learning software platform; and a spattering of pics of our students interacting with our class pet lizard, Curtiss, and investigating aquatic microorganisms from our classroom aquatic ecosystem.

Decatur First Lego League Goes to State!
Congratulations to our Decatur First Lego League Team! The 2 x 4's represented Decatur with such grace at the Illinois State First Lego League Robotics competition at Elgin Community College. The team won a special award known as "The Breakthrough Award" and more than quadrupled their Robotics score from where they started out 2 years ago! The future looks bright for Decatur First Lego League!

Spaghetti Tower STEM Challenge
To ease back as we begin 2022, each class worked as small teams to practice their creative engineering and design skills by trying to be the team to create the tallest spaghetti tower. A 6th grade team from Room 103 created the tallest at just over 30". This activity is a perfect way to reestablish classroom collaboration and strengthen our community after the long winter break!

Introducing our hamster Krimpets!

We recently got a hamster who have named Krimpets as in Butterscotch Krimpets from our novel we read last year Maniac Magee. She is a Syrian long haired hamster and quite large as far as hamsters go. We are really excited about our new classmate!

4th grade Simple System Solar Panel Lab

Wizard of Oz 2022 Cast List!

Decatur students are SO READY to get started on our 2022 musical, "The Wizard of Oz." Cast and crew lists have been posted to Google Classrooms. With 74 students in the Auditioned Cast, 42 Crew Members, and 120 in our chorus, it is sure to be an energetic show! Mark your calendars for April 6th at 1:00pm and April 7th at 9:30am and 1:00pm to witness the magic as an audience member!

5th Math Calculating Speed

Students traveled 10 meters down the hallway at a consistent pace and were timed by their classmates so that they could each calculate their speed and compare it to world records in other sports.
