WK5 | Universe of Obligation
Students discussed and analyzed texts centered around identity and belonging. Our discussions helped us transition into formulating and creating working definitions for the phrase "universe of obligation". Our studies in Social Studies will aim to help students make further connections with their novel study on "Refugee".

Engineering in Makerspace
It's been a thrilling week in Makerspace! Students in K-2 finalized their first Makerspace challenge: 'Index Card Towers'. Students in 5th grade held a talking circle about how to work in groups. Students in 3rd-8th also began working in groups to engineer a bucket tower to hold as much weight as they could. Some students' buckets held up to 100 grams of weight! Wow!

Week 4: Sept. 20-24, 2021
In Science class this week, students in grades 6-8 began their SEPUP inquiry units by becoming familiar with their textbook structure and text features of informational Science textbooks. Each grade level then began the first lessons of their prospective units: Weather and Climate for grade 6; From Cells to Organisms for grade 7; and Reproduction for grade 8.

3rd Grade Soccer Practice
We are starting our soccer unit in PE, and our first skill we are working on in dribbling. The thirds graders practiced dribbling down and back, weaving in-between the cones and ended the day with a a relay race!

6th grade students drum together in our new music room!
5th and 6th grade students have been drumming and learning the history behind some of the instruments in the music room. Here you can see them playing tubano drums, a djembe, a gonkogui, and shekeres. Ask your child to tell you about these instruments at home. What are they made of? Where are they from? What are they used for in the cultures that they come from?

Week 3 of 2021/22
This post slide show shows: pictures of the amazing turnout at the Decatur Family Picnic last weekend with students and families meeting my son's service dog and our family pet, Dosido; up close looks at how the students were introduced to our various inquiry units' Driving Questions Board; how each class came up with their own working definition of Science; and how students learned about Science Lab Safety Guidelines.

Week 3 | Mask-Making Preparation & Brainstorming
This week, 6th graders reflected on various resources to discuss why we wear masks and what would happen if we decided to show the world what was behind our masks. As a continuation of our Identity & Community unit, students began brainstorming and drafting ideas for a mask that they will be constructing in some of our upcoming classes.
