Week 24: Feb. 28-March 4, 2022
This week's slideshow highlights: 6th graders who are always eager to play the role of teacher by sharing their understanding in front of their class; 6th graders conducting a lab exploring how ground water/aquifers form as part of their SEPUP inquiry unit on "Earth's Resources"; 7th graders working on their Decatur Gala Auction Project where they each represented a different element of the Periodic Table of Elements (special thanks to Ms. Koreman, Ms. Strong, and our amazing 7th grade room parents, Dariela and Tara, for your support!); 8th graders cooperatively creating, producing, and filming their own I-Movies to culminate their SEPUP inquiry unit on "Evolution"; and a few more shots of our class pet lizard, Curtiss! Talk-A-Mile-A-Minute 6th Grade Team 103
Check out this video of our amazing 6th graders participating in a fun interactive learning game called "Talk-A-Mile-A-Minute", which reinforces academic vocabulary development in Science class in order to lay a solid foundation for much higher text complexity and scientific writing later in high school and college. It is so much fun to witness the enthusiasm our 6th graders choose to display towards their learning and thank you for checking in with us :)

Students applied their understanding of unit rate and percentages to buying a car of their choice and either finding the energy costs (gas or electric) for the year or various aspects of the financing involved in getting the car.

Week 23: Feb. 22-25, 2022
This weeks slideshow highlights: 6th graders learning about ground water formation through cooperative group experimental investigations as part of their SEPUP geology unit "Earth's Resources"; a couple of 6th graders eager to share their reasoning in front of the class; 8th graders began a cooperative group project creating their own I-Movies to culminate their SEPUP biology unit exploring "Evolution"; a couple of appearances of our class Bearded Dragon, Curtiss, who speaking of Evolution she seems to be a glimpse back millions of years ago to the age of dinosaurs; 7th grade culminated their biology unit on "Reproduction" by taking their comprehensive final exam this week--I will make sure to highlight them more next week! Week 22: February 14-18, 2022
This week's slideshow update includes: 6th graders active exploring their Earth's Resources SEPUP Geology Unit with 2 lab activities, one learning how remote seismic technology is used to locate underground resources deposits, and the other using chemical reactions to extract copper from malachite ore samples; 7th grade class played a Jeopardy Game to review for their SEPUP Unit Exam on "Reproduction"; 8th graders did some research on the reliability of online articles under the topics of "Selective Breeding" and "Genetically Modified Organisms" as they conclude their SEPUP Unit exploring "Evolution".

I also added a couple of shots to show how amazing our Decatur Junior High Students are: a couple of 6th graders went above and beyond an article assignment from a recent Science World Magazine article on "Cells" by making their own cell models including a very detailed diorama model and a student who chose to knit his cell model and another 6th grader brought in their own mineral samples from home to share with classmates; and a couple of 8th graders who volunteered as lab. assistants to clean up SEPUP trays from the 6th grade experiment on extracting copper from ore samples.

Community Building FUN in the SNOW!!!
This Friday, students got to spend the afternoon playing board games in the gym and outside in the snow participating in joint activities such as sports, making snow figures in the ground, burying a classmate in the snow (he wanted to be buried and was alive and well afterwards), and making an igloo together!
