Decatur Classical School’s 2017 Annual Spring Show

Q: What is this annual spring show? A: The Decatur school play/musical is a longstanding tradition, and a wonderful community building opportunity. It is a part of the music and dance curriculum, spearheaded by our music teacher, Ms. Schmittle

Q: When is the spring show? A: This year the musical will take place on Wednesday, May 24 and Thursday, May 25 at 7:00pm on both nights.

Q: Where is the performance? A: Both shows will be performed at Mather High School, 5835 N. Lincoln Avenue.

Q: Is participation in the show a part of my child’s grade? A: No, it is not. Of course, participation is highly encouraged but Ms. Schmittle completely understands if you have scheduling conflicts. So, by all means, do what is best for you and your family. Please let Ms. Schmittle know if your child is unable to attend.

Q: I see there are two days for the musical. Does my child perform on both days? A: No, your child will only perform on the day his/her class is assigned to perform.

Wednesday, May 24: 100 (Wachenheimer), 104 (Rogowski), 105 (Coleman), 106 (Cohen), 111 (Pfest)

Thursday, May 25: 102 (Cole), 103 (Allegretti), 107 (Thomas), 109 (Brennan), 110 (Sharping)

Q: How do I get tickets? A: Today, your ticket order form is in your child’s Tuesday take home folder. (May 2nd) Tickets are $10/adults and $3/child (over 4 years old). Children under 4 are free. Please make checks payable to Decatur Classical School. Upon receipt of your ticket order form, your name will be on a list at the door the evening of the performance.

Q: Why do you sell tickets? A: Ticket sales support the fine arts program and other programmatic needs. It is one of the few ways in which we are able to get a few “extras” for the arts at the school.

Q: Do I need to buy a costume? A: No. Please have your child where the basic top and bottom as outlined in the attached costume flyer, and upon arrival at Mather the evening of the performance accessories will be added to your child’s costume backstage by parent volunteers.

Q: Will my child be required to wear makeup? A: Make-up is entirely optional and can be applied at home. It will NOT be applied at Mather before performances.

Q: What time does my child need to be at Mather High School? A: On the day your child is performing, s/he must be dropped off at entrance 7 at Mather High School no earlier than 6:00 and no later than 6:15.

Q: This is during my child’s snack/dinner time. May I send him/her with food or snacks? A: Only water bottles are allowed backstage. (No juice or milk)

Q: It seems like my child could be waiting a long time backstage before the show begins. May I send him/her with books or activities? A: YES! Absolutely! We encourage books, card games, but please no electronics or large board games. They can/will get lost or misplaced, as backstage can become quite hectic. We cannot hold onto these items or guarantee their safe return to your child. Please label everything with your child’s name.

Q: Who is supervising the children backstage? A: Our wonderful teachers and parent volunteers are backstage supervising and also assisting with escorting our children to the bathrooms and on and off stage.

Q: Should we bring flowers for our performers? A: No need! Flowers will be available for purchase from an outside vendor who will be at Mather.

Q: What time will the doors open for the audience? A: Doors open at 6:45pm.

Q: How are children dismissed after the performance? A: Children will come back to the stage and his/her name will be called and a parent/adult must come to “claim” the child. Parents will be asked to stay in the auditorium. Please do not go backstage. We will make every attempt to dismiss children safely.

Q: What if I have more questions not addressed here? A: Please feel free to contact Glynis Bergner at glynisbergner@comcast.net or Ms. Schmittle at cschmittle@cps.edu.
