It’s hard to believe we are almost half way through the year, time flies when you are having fun learning together!

Here are a few highlights from our week together.

  • Reading – This week, I worked with individual students to reassess their reading levels. This is the second time I am doing this because it’s important that the students are reading at the correct level for both fluency and comprehension. While I was working with students one on one, the rest of the class was busy working with a fun text that compared LEGOs and Minecraft. Students used this text to work on inferences, vocabulary, comparing/contrasting and answering questions about the text using text evidence.
  • We completed Chapter 6 – Understand Division this week and took our assessment on Friday, January 26th. Next week we will continue to work on division in Chapter 7 – Division Facts and Strategies. Remember to check out for resources and videos about our math lessons.
  • Writing/Grammar – Second graders worked on writing about a polar bear’s day this week after reading about polar bears on our iPads. In grammar, students continued to explore verbs by discussing linking verbs and irregular verbs. We love the watching the grammar videos on Khan Academy in the classroom. Check them out at home for free if your child has questions or wants to practice their skills.
  • Science – In science this week, we took an assessment on Unit 5 – Environments for Living Things. Also, the “Design A Bug” project is due at school MONDAY, January 29th. Students will NOT be giving an oral report. Instead, we will be doing a gallery walk in the classroom so everyone will get to see all the projects up close. I’m looking forward to seeing all the creative projects on Monday!
  • Social Studies – This week the class we completed talking about governments and used our Social Studies notebook to answer the questions on an assessment. Then we started talking about important Hispanic Americans, we will continue talking about different individuals for the next few weeks.
