Principal’s Newsletter

Happy September! I apologize in advance for the length of this newsletter. I wanted to highlight important information for the first day of school. I promise that future newsletters will not be this lengthy. Please take a moment to read through all the information and attachments.

Today I walked through the building to ensure we are ready for Tuesday and took a moment to reflect on the past few weeks. After being on the job for a little over a month I’ve learned a few things:
Decatur teachers are committed and amazing people
Parents are incredible partners
This job is REALLY hard, but so rewarding.

I know the first day of school can be a mix of both excitement and worry. We are grateful that you are entrusting us with your children. It’s going to be a great day.

See you on Tuesday!
Our website is now working! Thank you for your patience!

Important Back to School Information
Updated Decatur Parent Handbook:

We’ve updated our handbook, which you can read by clicking here. I’d like to highlight some of the most important changes below.

Drop-off Procedures:

We will now offer ‘Kiss & Go’ on Sacramento (southbound) & Greenleaf. There will be a staff member and ‘Kiss & Go’ sign to help direct you. PLEASE read the handbook for directions on how to utilize ‘Kiss & Go’.

There is no parking or stopping anywhere on Sacramento between Lunt & Estes (except for kiss & go).

Do not park in the bus lane.

Plan on arriving EARLY if you are driving and please park in a legal parking spot in our neighborhood.

Teachers will greet students on the playground at 7:45am (see map attached to the parent handbook).

If you are picking up your child from school plan meet your child on the playground at 2:45pm. (see map in the handbook)

Please park in the neighborhood if you plan to pick up your child at 2:45pm. Make sure to arrive early enough to find parking.

Additional Requests:

Send a note with your child indicating how he/she will get home on the first day of school. It will help us greatly.

We do not permit parents to walk their children to their classes. If your child is having a hard time leaving you, take your time on the playground. We are not going to rip them away from you unless you tell us to.

Once you leave your happy child on the playground at 7:45am, you are welcome to have coffee in the new cafeteria from 7:45-8:30am. Walk across the playground, through the parking lot, and enter the multi-purpose room through door 11. It will be open! We will have additional office forms printed in case you want to fill them out while you sip some coffee.

There is a lot of transition and adjusting that takes place the first week of school. Your patience is greatly appreciated.

To learn more regarding these procedures, the new ‘report an absence’ feature, and look at cool maps made by Ms. Sharping, read through the parent handbook.
Staffing for 2017-18:

For reasons beyond our control, Ms. Allegretti will not return to Decatur Classical School this September. I would like to thank Ms. Allegretti for the dedication and care she showed our students. Please join me in wishing her well and much success in her future endeavors.

Haley Garlock is Decatur’s new 2nd grade teacher. As a first year as a teacher, she couldn’t be happier to be joining the Decatur team! After having many wonderful teachers, she followed her passion graduated in December 2016 from the University of Iowa with a degree in Elementary Education. Since then, she returned home to Lake Zurich where she substituted before moving into the city. Working with children is something that she feels passionately about. Haley is excited to start the school year!

Officer Hasan Al-Amin is our new off-duty police officer. Officer Al-Amin was born and raise in Chicago and has been a police officer for almost 22 years. He is a sports fanatic and loves to golf. He is honored to be part of our community.

I want to thank the PTA for their continued support of our school. I’d like to highlight & thank Tara Kowalke and Veronica Rosbolt for organizing the best back to school picnic ever! These ladies put on a fabulous event in less than one month’s time. I hope you will join me in thanking them for their hard work! I still can’t decide what was the best part of the night: the Doughnut Vault food truck or bouncy house?
