It is with tremendous excitement that we write to let you know that tonight the LSC voted unanimously to award a four-year Principal’s contract to Yolanda Luna-Mroz. Ms. Luna-Mroz has accepted the job, and will officially begin at Decatur on July 1.
Ms. Luna-Mroz joins us from Hamilton Elementary School, where she has served as Assistant Principal for the last seven years. She was instrumental in strengthening Hamilton’s curriculum, and worked to create a student-centered environment by giving students a voice in their education and by partnering with teachers. She is a proponent of Arts Education, having written and produced three school productions based on classic children’s stories. She also championed a Social Emotional Learning program, which is taught in every grade. Before Hamilton, she taught fourth grade at Stockton Elementary School, and also served as Chair of its newly-created middle school department when Stockton expanded beyond a K-6 school. She is a Chicago native, having grown up in Lakeview and having attended Lane Tech and DePaul University. She received a Masters Degree from National Louis University in 2006.
The Principal Selection Committee (which was comprised not only of LSC members, but also other parents, teachers and staff members) did a tremendous amount of work in narrowing the talented pool of applicants down to Ms. Luna-Mroz, and we thank them all for contributing their talents, expertise, and valuable time to this important process. We also want to thank those members of our community who provided feedback during the selection process. We took all feedback into consideration in determining the qualities and experience we would prioritize in our next leader. The Committee received many applications for the position, and interviewed five strong finalists who were approved by the LSC. As part of the interview process, we also visited two schools, spending a total of almost six hours observing facilities, speaking with the candidates, teachers, parent volunteers, and students, and observing a wide variety of classroom activities. After reviewing the resumes, conducting the interviews, performing the site visits, and having numerous meetings, we felt strongly that Ms. Luna-Mroz was the best candidate for the job.
The PTA has generously offered to organize multiple opportunities for members of our community to meet Ms. Luna-Mroz during the coming months. We will offer these opportunities at different times and locations so that both parents and students will have a chance to meet her before the school year begins.
We are excited for Ms. Luna-Mroz to come to Decatur, and consider ourselves lucky to have her as our next Principal.
