The Decatur Classical Yahoo group is an informal network for parents to discuss and share information.
In order to keep non-Decatur related info and spam from coming through, you will need to request a membership from the moderator. *THIS SITE HAS LIMITED ITS MEMBERSHIP TO CURRENT DECATUR FAMILIES ONLY* Please put your child's name and grade in your request email so we don't inadvertently block your entry. This yahoo group is not a school sponsored site, it's as informal as a school-yard chat! Recommendations for extra-curricular activities, questions regarding all things kid related and other fun topics are open to discussion.
However, information regarding the school is frequently passed via the yahoo group by the LSC and the PTA. If you aren't a part of our group, you are missing out. Join Now!

Decatur Classical School believes that we have found the perfect equation for success! Supportive teachers/staff PLUS parental involvement EQUAL a highly successful learning environment. There are many great ways to get involved at Decatur whether you have just a few hours in the evening or can spend a day with us at school. Look here for the many ways you can get involved, as well as the multitude of flyers and emails that come to you directly during the school year.
Library Support
Be a library parent! Decatur's library is open weekly with visits from classrooms on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Help the students check out/return books, storytime for younger students, birthday book club luncheon and many more opportunities are available in the library. From a few hours to a full school day, there are always ways to get involved.
Contact Library Co-Chairs Erica Beutler, Jeannette Schar and Jenny Faliszek to volunteer AND look for flyers at the beginning of the school year. Email: Library Volunteering
School Play
The school wide Spring Production is just that–a PRODUCTION! So many volunteers are needed for this wonderful event. The entire school is choreographed, costumed and made-up individually. It takes an ARMY to get this work done. Look for volunteer forms and flyers about the school play in early Spring and sign up to be involved.
Field Trip Chaperones
Decatur students take many field trips throughout the school year. Parents are asked to volunteer their time to assist teachers on field trips to ensure the safety of all our students. Field Trip Chaperones are chosen on a first come first serve basis after the field trip forms are distributed. All forms have a section to volunteer on the bottom of the form. Field trip forms are sent out a couple of weeks prior to the actual date of the field trip to ensure that working parents are given the opportunity to take time off of work if they choose. Field trip dates are also on the school calendar sent out at the beginning of each month.
Book Swap
The school is always looking for volunteers to help with the all school Book Swap. Help collect books brought in by the students into grade appropriate sections and assist the classrooms when they come to select new books. Hand out snacks and surprises to the participants. Look for volunteering information to be sent home prior to the event.
PTA Volunteering Opportunities
Room Rep
Room Reps are the link between the parents and the classroom. The Room Rep will help with classroom organization on things such as holiday parties, class gifts, Spring Fundraiser activities such as financial collection and leadership for Room Baskets and Room Art Projects, etc. This position requires that you occasionally create flyers, collect classroom funds for the PTA, help in the classroom and make phone calls/email parents.
Room Rep volunteers sign up through the PTA VP of Communications Irais Ibarra.
Special Events
The PTA VP of Special Events coordinates the many school wide events that take place throughout the school year. These events include The PTA Round Up (membership drive/back to school party), the Jog-A-Thon (fundraiser), The Halloween Party, and The Spring Fling (year end carnival). Many volunteers are needed to make these events fun and safe for our students and their families. Look for flyers on the individual events to come home via backpack and email.
Contact Jacquelyn Hathaway VP of Special Events for more information.
Spring Fundraiser
Every Spring, Decatur Classical School's PTA hosts its annual Silent/Live Auction fundraiser. This evening of adults only fun raises monies for the entire yearly PTA Budget, special events and major gifts to the school. Past gifts have included; the Science Lab, Technology Lab, new computers and classroom Smart-Boards. This event takes many, many people to make it work! Time commitments range from a few hours, only evenings, only days or major projects for the event. You really can design your volunteering around your schedule, whether you work or have a small child at home, we've got something to do in whatever time you can allow. ALL VOLUNTEERING IS APPRECIATED!
For more information on the Spring Fundraiser contact the 2010 Spring Fundraiser Co-Chairs; Jeannette Schar, Kristin Boeke-Greven, Catherine Rockey and Caroline Padmanabhan. Email: Spring Fundraiser Volunteering
