February 5-February 9

Hello families!
We will be going on our first field trip to Lincoln Park Zoo, Wednesday, February 14.
If you haven’t yet, please make sure you fill out the permission slip.
Thank you to all who volunteered to chaperone. I will send a finalized list of chaperones prior to the field trip.
February 14 is also Valentine’s Day. We will not have an official party but the children will have an opportunity to pass out cards and/or non-edible treats in the afternoon.  There are 27 children in the class, 11 boys and 16 girls.
Due to the snow day, the 100th day will be Friday, February 16. Earlier this week your child brought home two requests, one for 3 jokes/riddles and one for 100 of the same item.  Please return those on or before February 16.
We filled our marble jar to the next level! We decided our reward would be to bring a stuffed animal to school.  Your child can bring a special stuffed animal to class on Wednesday, February 21.
A few things to consider when choosing that special friend…
  • You may not want to choose that “most favorite, can’t live without it” stuffed animal… just in case
  •  It should be manageable and fit in the back pack
Here’s a few things we’ve been up to….

Language Arts:  We continue to hone our skills identifying the main idea and finding supporting details in the text. Our word work focused on words with -ir, -er, and -ur. Please continue to use Spelling City to review the words of the week. We are expanding our vocabularies with robust words featured in our read aloud. This week we read Aesop’s fable, The Lion and the Mouse and explored the words: mercy, struggling and captured. We also read Tacky, a story about an odd penguin who saves his friends from hunters. Much like the mouse in Aesop’s fable, this story features an unlikely hero, encouraging us to appreciate differences in each other.

Math: We began chapter 6, counting and modeling numbers to 120. Perfect timing for the 100th day! Please continue to review the math coming home.

Science: We started Unit 5, Day and Night. Explore ThinkCentral for more math and science resources.
Social Studies: We are beginning a new unit, Our World and in Second Step we continued to practice managing strong emotions. We discussed how anger feels in our bodies and continued to practice our calm down steps.
Don’t forget to check out our school’s website for all the latest happenings.
Hope you all enjoyed the snow day!
Have a great weekend and stay safe.
