Decatur Cross Country Begins Season

By Brady Leonard

On Wednesday Sept. 27th, Decatur’s Cross Country team participated in its first meet of the season. It was held at Horner Park and the Dolphins competed against about 19 other schools from the area.  The categories the team competed in were 1-mile races for 4th grade and under for both boys and girls and 1-mile races for 5th/6th grades for both boys and girls. It was a beautiful, sunny day around 75 degrees, perfect weather for running.

The team is off to a great start! According to one of the lead parent coaches, Helen Lee, “Every single runner beat their own time from Monday’s practice, and many did so by quite a few minutes!”

The top runners in each category were: Ryder Page (5th grade), Megan O’Connor (5th grade), Raymond Weber (4th grade), and Emma Strong (4th grade).

Decatur’s Cross Country team practices with the Run Club every week, but only the 5th and 6th grade members will compete in the next 3 races over the next 3 weeks. If they qualify, the team will compete in the City Championshipson October 28th.

The next meet will be this Thursday, Oct. 5th at Lane Tech.
