Classroom Expectations & Policies:
Room 108 – Ms. Schmittle – Music

Welcome! I am very excited to be your child’s music teacher this year! We will explore the elements of music: rhythm, melody, form, harmony, timbre, texture, and dynamics through playing, improvising, and composing. Through this we explore a variety of music from around the world using our voices as well as through drumming, recorder, barred instruments, ukulele, guitar, and a variety of other instruments! Topics also include musical genres, instrument families, and music history. Check in each week on my website for weekly updates on what is going on in your child’s music class.

Expectations:

I expect students to accept the challenge of learning new music concepts and skills. This can be both challenging and fun! I expect parents to help their child by encouraging their child to practice (if applicable), and encouraging the student to voice concerns directly to me. Students may seek additional help after or before school. Additionally, students can visit: decaturmusic.weebly.com to find weekly fun videos, links to music related events in Chicago, and fun interactive music websites.

Recorder:

  • 3rd grade students will be beginning recorder in January. Stay tuned, more information to come!
  • 4th and 5th grade students will continue their studies of recorder. It is integrated with many of their music lessons and they should bring it to school each day they have music class – labeled with their name! 4th and 5th graders will use the same soprano recorder they received in 3rd grade. If a recorder has gone missing, please purchase a 3-Piece Yamaha Baroque Recorder YRS-24B. 5th Graders will be completing a unit using the alto recorder. It is a larger (and lower) recorder.

Ukulele:

  • Ukuleles will be used in multiple grades. However, 4th grade will spend a full unit really getting to know the instrument – playing technique, basic chords, strumming patterns, and tablature. If you would like to purchase an instrument for your child’s use at home, I recommend this model to start. It stays in tune well and is around $60.

Guitar:

  • Guitar units are taught in the 5th and 6th grades. 5th grade begins after the winter break. In 5th grade students will learn basic chords, reading a chord chart, instrument tuning, and basic technique. In 6th grade students continue to expand upon skills learned previously as well as exploring tablature, protest music, songwriting, the blues, and performing their own cover songs.

Communication:

I will send out a weekly email to you with the highlights from the week and any notices of upcoming tests or project due dates. This information will also be posted on my blog on the Decatur website. I am available for any questions or concerns via email. Please allow 48 hours during the week to reply to your emails.

Performance Information

Throughout the school year, there will be in-studio performances in music class and dance class. These performances will offer a unique and intimate look into your student’s arts classes and up-close view of your child exploring music and dance. We will send information in your classroom’s newsletter as well as post to the Decatur Dance and Decatur Music websites with more information.
